You really got to hand it over to
Games Workshop, the creator of the world of Warhammer 40,000. Great artwork & detailed explanation are their main trademarks along together with model-based board game. The game was recently made into a computer game, titled
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War, which has been drawing attention to a few fellow buddies around. So what makes it so interesting? Aside from the Space Marine (religious super soldier) they are faced with the fact that humanity is at the gritty era and fighting all fronts against the enemies like Tyrannids (Alien-like creature that appeared in one of their famous board game, Space Hulk), Eldars (think Elves), Dark Eldar (or darker Elves), Orks (Orcs, with a K), Chaos Marines (Space Marines that has succumbed to the Dark Side), Tau (a technologically superior young race) & Necrons (ancient mummified Terminator-like cyborg).
So how does the table-top game fare? I've seen the game played once over a smooth table where they have rules of combat. By placing shoot-out on a dice roll, it makes the game interesting where sometimes chance play a factor to win a battle. Each unit has different criteria on advancing the ground and some of them have special rule in which to govern their usage on the battlefield. Suffice to say, players have to be calculative in order to make sure that his unit takes every advantage the terrain could offer to win the battle.
Some Warhammer 40,000 fan loved the world for not the game, but rather, they love the artwork and painted model. Yes the 2 & 1/2 model can be bought to be painted so that they not only make fearsome model on the battlefield but as good ornaments as well. Some of the units were painted and customized so heavily that they have their own name & even their own banner logo. Sometimes you'd feel like the figurine itself projected a personality which you'll be gapped in awe over the beautiful artwork rendered by the painter.

The above picture included Lord of the Rings & Warhammer. Both of the games are similar to Warhammer 40,000 but they're set on a different universe/era.
